M2. RECAP: THE AVOGADRO POSTULATE & MOLAR GAS VOLUME, V
m
This was covered in Section E5. at AMOUNTofSUBSTANCE.com but a recap here is appropriate.
The significance of Avogadro’s law is that it enables changes in the number of molecules – and therefore chemical amount, n, – taking place during a chemical reaction in the gas phase to be followed by measurement of changes in the total volume or pressure.
Thus, roughly one hundred years before any details of atomic structures emerged, the gas laws laid the foundations for the development of stoichiometry, thus greatly accelerating the development of the science of chemistry.
